The U.S. State Department administered DV Lottery Program awards immigrant visas (green cards) to individuals hailing from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. This year there are 50,000 DV visas available. The dates established for electronic DV Lottery applications are between noon on October 3, 2017, and noon on November 7, 2017, Eastern Standard Time. Visas are distributed among six geographic regions, with no visas going to natives of countries sending more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the past five years.
Who May Enter the DV Lottery Program?
The following natives of these countries are not eligible to apply: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born only), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories and Vietnam.
Natives of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Taiwan are eligible.
It is important to note that for individuals who might be excluded from registration due to country of birth, they may still be able to qualify through a spouse born in an eligible country.
What Criteria Are Necessary To Qualify for Registration for the DV Lottery?
In addition to birth in a country that is eligible for participation, an applicant must possess either a high school education or equivalent, defined as successful completion of a 12-year course of study of elementary and secondary education, or two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience to perform the job.
Entry into the DV Lottery Program
An online form and a digital photo are submitted through the official DV lottery website. One entry is permitted per applicant. Should an applicant submit multiple registrations, he or she would be disqualified. No fees are charged for this application.

In order to determine if one has been selected to participate in the DV Lottery program, applicants can visit the E-DV Entrant Status Check web site. Notification of selection will be available starting May 1, 2018 through September 30, 2018. A successful applicant will be directed to a confirmation page that will provide further instructions, including information on fees connected with immigration to the United States. The E-DV Entry Status Check web site will be the only means by which selectees will be notified of their selection for the DV Lottery. In the past, much fraud has been perpetrated by trollers seeking fees in advance for payment. It is noteworthy to point out that no fee is required for this process until after May 1, 2018 with a notification that an applicant has "won" a lottery number.
