Steven Troup was featured in the Q&A section of the Cooperator’s July 2013 issue. The article, titled “Unfairly Charged” addresses the question of how a co-op homeowner should handle a dispute with management about unfair expenses incurred. Steve advises that it’s important to review the lease and bylaws in order to conclude whether the shareholder or the co-op should be responsible for the charges. He also discussed a potential solution whereby the unit owner would “withhold maintenance and let the co-op board commence a nonpayment proceeding in housing court.” Steven noted that isn’t always a feasible option and the shareholder could face additional charges.
Chair of the Cooperative Condominium Practice, Steve focuses in the areas of cooperative and condominium law, construction law, real estate transactions, and real estate and construction litigation and arbitration.
