On May 24, 2021, the U.S. Department of State announced that it was working together with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to facilitate the return from abroad of those U.S. citizens holding expired passports. U.S. citizens currently located overseas whose passports expired on or after January 1, 2020, will be able to travel to the United States with their expired passports until December 31, 2021, if they meet the following criteria:
