Today’s tax rules require more complex planning. In the development of clients’ estate plan, we take into account all aspects of the complex federal and state laws and regulations that affect transfers of wealth. Many of our clients have real estate holdings and closely-held businesses that require multi-tiered planning. Working closely with the Firm’s Tax, Corporate, Capital Markets and M&A, and Real Estate Practices, we counsel clients on optimal strategies for the protection and disposition of assets, which includes business succession planning for closely-held businesses. We often have clients who have assets in multiple states or countries, and we partner with local counsel through our network of vetted colleagues on ensuring planning that addresses international and other state laws.
As part of our practice, we review and guide our clients on the intersection of other legal issues, such as pre and post marital agreements and marital dissolutions, while also advising on how future wealth being passed on to younger generations may be protected from creditor or marital claims.
Our team handles the preparation of basic estate planning documents including wills and trusts for children for young families who are just starting their planning, to more mature families that are looking to do more sophisticated planning including life insurance trusts, SLATS, QPRTS, and other tax planning. Our team also assists and guides families who have members with special needs and require special needs trusts for those individuals in order to ensure their ongoing needs can be met.
Additionally, we counsel on estate and gift tax planning, and related tax issues as well as implementing gifting plans and strategies, preparing and filing gift and estate tax returns and related documents. Collaborating with our clients, we design a holistic plan to preserve assets and maximize the transfer of wealth to future generations through tax exemptions.
To ensure lasting success, we work with executors, administrators, and trustees to oversee the administration of our clients’ estate, from probate and administration proceedings to final accountings and distributions.
