An op-ed written by Labor & Employment chair Laurent Drogin was featured in the New York Law Journal. The op-ed was in response to Wendy Lazar’s May 1, 2017 NYLJ article, “The Gig Economy: A Threat to Basic Employment Rights." In Laurent’s op-ed, he points out that Ms. Lazar’s “use of a single example [in this case, “gig workers” – young, hip entrepreneurs who use apps to make extra money] to support the argument that the gig economy is bad for workers absent new or expanded statutory protections overlooks the fundamental fact that it is the workers themselves driving this new business model.” Laurent goes on to note that Ms. Lazar’s article blurs the line between individuals who choose to work "independently" for others, and those who prefer to work, with little or no overhead, providing their own individualized services to larger businesses.
