Cory L. Weiss, co-chair of Tarter Krinsky & Drogin’s Landlord & Tenant practice, was featured in The New York Times discussing tenant rights when landlords replace human doormen with AI.
Cory explained that if the state Division of Housing and Community Renewal had not previously approved the switch to a virtual doorman, rent-stabilized tenants can apply for a rent reduction. As Cory explained, the agency would then assess whether the AI replacement adequately substitutes for live doormen, comparing their previous hours and services with those now available, to make a determination on a reduction.
