The article delves into the approximately 500 new "I Love NY” blue highway signs authorized for installation by the Cuomo Administration. Pat explains, "The stated goal was to promote New York State and elements of the 'New York Experience.' The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) clearly warned New York State that these signs did not comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways. Unfazed, the State proceeded, basically daring the feds to do something about it.”
Ultimately, federal transportation officials contended that the signs were a distraction and placed too close together, among other issues, and moved to withhold $14 million in highway funds from New York State. Now, roughly 400 of the 500 new signs have been removed in an effort to restore the $14 million in highway funding. Pat concludes, "Other states looking to avoid millions in unnecessary expense should see this as a cautionary tale. But one can never discount the allure of a State’s self-promotion.”
