On May 24, 2021, the U.S. Department of State announced that it was working together with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to facilitate the return from abroad of those U.S. citizens holding expired passports. U.S. citizens currently located overseas whose passports expired on or after January 1, 2020, will be able to travel to the United States with their expired passports until December 31, 2021, if they meet the following criteria:

• Currently in possession of an expired U.S. passport
• Currently physically abroad seeking a direct return to the United States
• Flying directly to the United States, a U.S. territory, or only if a short-term transit (connecting flight) through a foreign country on direct return to the U.S. or a U.S. territory
• The expired passport was originally valid for ten years (or, if a child, was valid for five years)
• Expired passport is undamaged or unaltered

Note that all other passport rules that can be found on the U.S. Department of State website remain in effect.
