Meet the Women of Tarter Krinsky & Drogin: Immigration Partner Roxanne Levine

March 13, 2018

We are recognizing the achievements of the outstanding women of Tarter Krinsky & Drogin in honor of Women’s History Month. They are exceptional professionals who greatly contribute to the value we provide to our firm, our clients and our community. In this installment, learn more about Immigration partner Roxanne Levine.

Why did you choose your profession?
I had always wanted to go to law school as I come from a family of lawyers who practice in Canada. After a brief detour completing a master’s degree in history, I attended law school and worked with a New York boutique firm that specialized in U.S. immigration law. There were not many firms that specialized in immigration law at the time, so this firm represented very well-known figures and international corporations, in addition to the traditional practice areas of family-based immigration, deportation and removal, and asylum. I became very passionate about U.S. immigration law during my time there. Every day was a challenge and there was always something new to learn.

What do you like most about your work?
Fulfilling people’s dreams of securing permanent residence and citizenship in one of the best countries in the world brings me much satisfaction and personal fulfillment.

What is the best advice you ever received?
My father taught me to treat every client as if he or she is your only client.

What has been the key to your success?
Whether or not a client may be happy to hear the advice I give, I believe that responsiveness is key. In a world that moves faster and faster each day, this characteristic has stood me in good stead.

What woman most inspires you and why?
Ruth Bader Ginsburg inspires me. I feel she is honest and forthright, firm and fair. She has been a strong advocate promoting women in the field of law and a leader in areas related to social justice.

What do you like most about your work?
There is always a question that doesn’t have a ready answer and needs investigation. Each day remains a challenge in this practice area.

What do you wish you could tell your younger professional self?
Keep the passion for everything you do.

How do you achieve a work-life balance?
It is hard to balance the personal and professional worlds in which we all live and the lines tend to blur. It’s important to carve out personal time with family and to devote your time to the things that matter to you, whether it be local community-based work, volunteering at your children’s school or just taking some downtime for yourself. Taking walks in the neighborhood and keeping up with friends helps me to find work/life balance.

What do you enjoy most about working at TKD?
A colleague who arrived at TKD shortly after I did asked me why everyone was always smiling. I find that I am always happy to get up in the morning and come to work. My colleagues are professionals at the tops of their fields and are very devoted to their practice areas. We all share a love for what we do.
